Care Details

Light

This young plant relies on bright indirect light to fuel itself through its limited green patches. Keep the small pot about one to two feet from a soft east-facing window, or under an adjustable LED grow light on a lower setting.

Keep it completely away from direct midday sun, it'll dry out the fragile tissue and turn it see-through within an hour. If the light's too dim, the plant will stop growing new leaves, or might even revert to plain green. A steady twelve-hour cycle of diffused light gives it what it needs to hold onto its pattern as it grows.

Water

Watering a tissue culture starter takes a careful balance, you want the fine roots hydrated but not suffocated. Keep the growing medium like a well wrung-out sponge, never fully dry, never muddy.

Water lightly whenever the top layer starts to lose that damp feel, usually every three to five days. Never let the base sit in standing water, root rot can take hold fast at this stage. Use room-temperature distilled water or rainwater only, to avoid shocking the tiny root system.

Humidity & Temperature

This young plant needs high humidity, ideally 70% or higher, since it hasn't hardened off to normal household air yet. A humidity dome, propagation box, or small greenhouse cabinet works well here.

Keep the temperature steady, between 70°F and 82°F, warmer than a mature plant would need. Avoid any sudden temperature swings, drafts, or cold air, this stage of the plant is very sensitive to environmental shock.

Soil & Fertilizing

At this early stage, use a clean, airy propagation mix rather than regular potting soil. A good blend is equal parts pre-moistened long-fiber sphagnum moss and coarse perlite, which keeps the mix from compacting around new roots.

Don't use full-strength fertilizer on a starter plant, it'll burn the roots. Once it's acclimated and puts out its first true household leaf, start feeding with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to quarter strength, just once a month during summer.

Propagation
