Large Tillandsia Curly Slim

To keep the thick leaves healthy, place your Tillandsia near a bright window with filtered light. It does best with a good amount of ambient indirect light.

Avoid direct afternoon sun, it'll break down the leaf tissue fast and leave permanent bleached spots. It can handle some lower light for short stretches, but too long in the dark will loosen its curls, dull its silvery look, and slow its growth. A few feet back from a bright east or west-facing window works well.

Since it doesn't have real roots for drinking, this plant takes in water through its leaves. Submerge it fully in room-temperature distilled, filtered, or rainwater for 20 minutes once a week.

After the soak, shake it upside down gently to get rid of any water trapped in the leaf folds. Let it dry upside down somewhere with good airflow. Don't let it sit wet for too long, trapped moisture in the core can cause the plant to rot fast.

This plant does well with humidity around 40 to 60%. It's fine in a normal home, but make sure it dries out fully within 2 hours after its bath, so water doesn't sit in the leaf folds.

Keep the temperature between 60°F and 80°F year-round. Keep it off cold windows in winter, and away from AC units or heating vents, sudden temperature changes can shock it.

This plant should never go in regular potting soil, it'll suffocate the base and cause rot fast. Display it soil-free, resting in a bowl, mounted on driftwood, or nestled in coarse orchid bark if it's in a container.

Since it can't pull nutrients from soil, use a diluted air-plant misting solution sparingly. Spray it lightly once a month in spring and summer, and let it dry out completely after.

This plant follows a typical life cycle for its kind, the parent plant blooms once, then grows small pups at its base before it eventually dies off. You can propagate it once those pups are about a third the size of the parent.

Gently separate the pup from the base by hand, or use a clean knife to slide it free. Treat it just like a full-grown plant from there, giving it bright indirect light and a weekly bath.

Since this plant has no real root system and doesn't grow in soil, you never need to repot it. It won't outgrow a pot because it doesn't live in one.

If it's sitting in a container with orchid bark for stability, just refresh or dust the bark once in a while. Otherwise, feel free to change up its mount, wire frame, or display dish whenever you want.

This plant is completely pet friendly and non-toxic. There's nothing harmful in it, so it won't cause any harm if a curious pet plays with or chews on the leaves.

That said, since the curled shape is delicate and breaks easily, it's best to mount or display it up on a shelf or wall, out of your pet's reach.

The Tillandsia Curly Slim is a cultivated hybrid, but its parent plants come from the tropical and dry forests, rocky cliffs, and canopies of Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean. In the wild, they grow as air plants anchored to tree trunks or rocks, with plenty of airflow, warmth, and dappled sunlight.

This plant gives you a built-in way to check if it needs water, its curls change with moisture. The leaves have fibers that shrink and tighten as they dry out, curling the leaves into tight spirals.

After a good weekly soak, the leaves fill back up with water and relax, uncoiling slightly. That gives you an easy visual cue for when it needs a drink.
